In what authorities are calling a “major industrial accident,” three people were airlifted and another was transported to local hospitals from the ExxonMobil refinery in Baytown, Texas after an explosion occurred inside the plant on December 23, 2021, around 1 a.m.
The refinery is located along the Houston Ship Channel, employs about 7,000 people, and has can process up to 584,000 barrels of crude oil each day. The refinery also makes chemically based products like butyl for car tires and polypropylene for bumpers.
What Caused the ExxonMobil Industrial Accident in Baytown, Texas?
Since the fire broke out early Thursday morning, ExxonMobil officials were still unsure of the cause of the explosion. However, they stated it did not appear necessary for nearby residents to evacuate or shelter-in-place.
Unfortunately, the Baytown facility and employees who work there are no strangers to fires and explosions.
With previous explosions occurring in March and August 2019 at the same facility, both of which required the plant to implement a shelter-at-home order, it may be too early to tell the long-term effects of the explosion.
